UC BERKELEY – Degree-seeking mobility and exchange semesters

1. General overview

The University of California, Berkeley is one of the founding campuses of the University of California system (1868) and consistently ranks among the top universities worldwide (THE, QS, Shanghai rankings).

Approximate figures:

  • 45,000 students
  • 12,000 staff

UC Berkeley is internationally recognized for excellence in:

  • engineering
  • fundamental sciences
  • economics
  • data science
  • technological innovation

2. Mobility opportunities for ENPC students

Students in the ENPC engineering program may study at UC Berkeley through three main pathways.

A. Degree-seeking Master's programs (individual application)

Selected MEng programs recognized by ENPC

  • MEng in Industrial Engineering & Operations Research
  • MEng in Mechanical Engineering

Relevant ENPC departments

  • GMM
  • GI
  • IMI

Duration

  • 2–3 semesters

Application

  • Individual application through Berkeley Graduate Admissions
  • Highly selective admission process

B. Non-degree exchange program

Berkeley International Study Program (BISP)

Official website:
https://bisp.berkeley.edu/

Non-degree exchange with credit transfer.

Selection

  • Up to 10 ENPC students per year

Eligible departments

  • GCC
  • VET
  • GMM
  • GI
  • SEGF
  • IMI

Important
The BISP program is available only during the Fall semester.

C. Berkeley Global Computing and Data Science Program (CDSS)

(College of Computing, Data Science, and Society – UC Berkeley Extension)

Academic positioning for ENPC

This program is particularly relevant for students in:

IMI – Ingénierie Mathématique et Informatique

Recommended mobility timing:
Fall semester of « 2A » (early Master's level).

Academic structure (CDSS program)

Typical semester structure:

1 required course

  • Computing, Data Science, and the Future Workplace (CDSS X410)

1 core course (choose one)

  • Principles and Techniques of Data Science (DATA C100)
    or
  • Modern Statistical Prediction and Machine Learning (STAT 154)

2 electives

  • One CDSS elective (Statistics, Data Science, Computer Science, or selected EECS courses)
  • One Berkeley elective from the UC Berkeley course catalogue

Compatibility with the IMI curriculum (reference S3)

Recommended academic components:

  • one statistics course
  • one machine learning course
  • possibly stochastic processes
  • possibly programming (Python or C++)

The CDSS program generally allows students to construct a coherent learning agreement meeting these requirements, subject to approval by the IMI department.

Credit load

Typical full-time load:
13 units per semester

Students may take 14 units or more, but each additional unit above 13 units incurs an extra cost of $885 USD per unit.

Application timeline

  • Priority deadline: April 15
  • Admission decision typically within two weeks after application submission.

Language requirements

Minimum recommended level:

  • TOEFL ≥ 90
  • IELTS ≥ 7.0
  • TOEIC ≥ 750
  • Cambridge CAE C1.

Language requirements may vary slightly depending on the program :

  • BISP : TOEIC is accepted as an exception. A score ≥ 800 is preferable.
  • CDSS :
    • TOEIC is not accepted.
    • Other certificates must have been issued within the last two years.
    • If no valid certificate, possibility to take an online test  (option 3)

Important clarification

The BISP program and the CDSS program are separate academic frameworks.

Courses from the two programs cannot be freely combined within the same semester.

3. Academic requirements

BISP

  • Minimum 12 units per semester (F-1 visa requirement)
  • Regular UC Berkeley courses
  • Subject to course availability
  • Learning agreement subject to ENPC approval
  • No Berkeley diploma awarded

CDSS

  • Full-time academic workload compliant with F-1 visa rules
  • Strong prerequisites in mathematics and programming
  • Students receive a UC Berkeley certificate (non-degree)

4. Visa and international procedures

International students must obtain an F-1 visa.
